Those Gorgeous Ragdoll Colors and Patterns!

Ragdolls are a "Pointed" breed, which means that they have a lighter body color with darker ears, face, legs, and tail.  Most major cat associations recognize the following colors:  Seal Point (Chocolate is the dilute or lighter form); Blue Point (the dilute form of Blue is called Lilac); and recently Red or Flame (the dilute form is Cream).   Ragdolls with no white patterning (explanation below) are called "Colorpoints".  No matter what their color or pattern, all Ragdoll cats will have those captivating crystal-blue eyes!  A so-called  "ragdoll" with some other eye color is NOT a real Ragdoll!

Ragdoll Colors:

  • A Seal Colorpoint Ragdoll has points of deep seal brown with a lighter body color of beige, cream, or pale fawn.  The chest, bib, and underside are lighter than the body color.  Paw pads and nose leather are dark seal brown.
  • Blue Colorpoint Ragdolls will have dark blue-gray points with bluish-white body color.  Again, the chest, bib, and underside will be lighter than the body color.  Paw pads and nose leather are blue-gray.
  • Red or Flame Colorpoint Ragdolls will have Orange-Red points, with warm creamy white or light orange-tinged body color (at maturity), and lighter chest, bib, and underside.  Paw pads and nose leather are hot pink.
  • Tortie Point Ragdolls are carriers of the red gene, and splashes of red or cream are mixed in with either Seal or Blue to give an attractive "tortoiseshell" effect.  Because this is a sex-linked gene, only females can be Torties.
  • Lynx Ragdolls are Ragdolls in any of the above colors, who also carry a "Lynx" gene.  This gene creates tiger-like striping which overlays the pointed areas.
  • Ragdolls which display both the Tortie and the Lynx markings are registered as "Torbie" Points--from a combination of "Tortie" + "Tabby" (Lynx).

Ragdoll Patterns:  Ragdolls are recognized in 3 distinct and attractive patterns, in addition to the colors already noted above:

  • A "Colorpoint" Ragdoll, as described above, has ears, face, legs, and tail in a darker color, with a lighter body color.  A colorpoint will not have white markings, although the light body color may appear white on some cats.
  • The adorable "Mitted" Ragdoll pattern will still have the dark points like the colorpoint, but also has white "mittens" on the front paws, white "boots" on the back legs, a white strip on the stomach and a white ruff, as well as a white chin.  It has been said that Mitted Ragdolls look like they went wading in cream, and sneaked a sip!
  • Beautiful "Bicolor" Ragdolls will have dark "points" (ears and tail), but the mask is interrupted by an inverted "V" which runs between the eyes and expands into the muzzle.  A Bicolor's legs, stomach, and ruff will be entirely white, while the body color will form a "saddle" on the cat's back.  These Ragdolls look like they went swimming in cream, and took a deep drink!  Nose leather and paw pads will be pink.  The picture of our Victoria at the top of this page is a wonderful example of a Bicolor Ragdoll--you can see her darker ears and mask, the symmetrical white pattern on her face with her cute pink nose, and her white legs, chest, and ruff.  If you look carefully you will notice the "saddle" of body color on her back.

Ragdoll Descriptions:

  • Ragdolls are registered and described by combining color and pattern: For example, a seal Ragdoll might be a "Seal Colorpoint", a "Seal Mitted", or "Seal Bicolor".  Lynx, Tortie, and Torbie Ragdolls can also be Mitted or Bicolor: So a Ragdoll might even be registered as a "Seal Torbiepoint Bicolor"!

 A Note

  • The Flame, Cream, and Tortie Point Ragdolls, as well as the Lynx Points, have been accepted for championship status in TICA (The International Cat Association) within the last several years.  Since that time they have done very well in show competion although they are still relatively rare.
  • Since two of our breeding girls at RoyalDolls are Torbies (one Seal and one Blue-Cream), we expect to have all of these rare and wonderful Ragdoll patterns available  on a limited basis.
  • If you are especially interested in a certain Ragdoll color or pattern, you may want to let us know so that we can put you on our waiting list as soon as possible.  We anticipate continued and growing interest in the "newer" Ragdoll colors, as well as the much-loved "traditional" colors and patterns!
